Frequently Asked Questions About Silk
Silk bedding varies widely by price, quality of workmanship, and type of silk. What you pay depends on what you know! As a longtime direct importer of silk, SimoSilk wants you to know the facts so you can make an informed decision.
When you know what questions to ask you'll be able to ensure getting your money's worth. For example, beware of purchasing silk bedding on a website that does not mention the product's
momme weight. In many cases they are selling an inferior 11-momme product for the same price that a reputable merchant such as SimoSilk charges for an 19-momme product!
Q: How are you able to offer such low prices?
A: We directly import our products from the factory, thus we are able to pass
the savings on to our customers.
Q: What is the thread count of your silk bedding?
A: Silk is much too fine to count the threads! Instead, a "momme" (mm) number is
assigned for silk fabrics.
Mommes are units of weight traditionally used to measure the
density of silk.
The higher the momme, the more durable the weave, and the more suitable it is
for heavy-duty use. And, the heavier the silk, the more opaque it becomes. This
can vary even between the same kind of silk. For example, lightweight charmeuse
is translucent when used in clothing, but 30mm charmeuse is opaque.

Q: Which type of silk do you use for your silk bedding?
A: For our silk comforters, sheets, and pillowcase shams, we use the most
expensive kind: 19 momme charmeuse silk.
You may have noticed our prices are more in line with the less expensive habotai
silk bedding found all over the Web. That's why it's important to know both the type
and momme value of silk when you're comparing prices!
Our silk blankets are created from noncultivated silkworms (caterpillars really)
in the wild, and their kind of silk is called Tussah, or "peace" silk.
